Carved channels for chrysalis and winter rest
Slender and vertical, the Butterfly Shelter holds thirty carved channels — each a different width and depth — that provide overwintering sites for chrysalises and resting habitat for adult butterflies during cool, wet days. A bundle of untreated bamboo tubes is packed into the lower third; the upper two-thirds are left open with a south-facing perch ledge. The outer shell is carved in a pattern of overlapping wing shapes — monarchs, swallowtails, painted ladies — at varying depths, so the light catches a new edge at every hour.
